Business Development Manager – Spain and Portugal


Job Description

I am currently recruiting for a Business Development Manager for one of our clients – a multi-national insurance service provider with an exceptional brand in the market. This exciting role will act as the relationship lead and principle point of contact for key financial services distributors in the territories of Spain and Portugal.

You will be responsible for the profitable development of business, maintaining excellent multi-level relationships with your clients, and supporting their sales & marketing efforts by sharing market knowledge and best practices and by helping to identify mutually beneficial business opportunities.

Key responsibilities of the role include;


  • Develops and delivers the local business plan.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of local industry trends and of the bank client’s needs.
  • Identifies opportunities for client-centric approach and for product or process innovation.

Business Development

  • Achieves plans and meets objectives in terms of results, client approach, product, processes and services.
  • Delivers required results – maximises insurance revenues in order to optimise the development and distribution of insurance products.
  • Supports sales, marketing & promotion plans and initiatives.

Business and Market Intelligence

  • Acts as subject matter expert (SME) for the local insurance market, using market intelligence to support both the business and the client in business development activities.
  • Supports development by gathering and sharing useful market intelligence including key market indicators, competitor activity reports, etc.

Managing Internal Relationships

  • To pro-actively develop and facilitate effective business and cross-functional relationships at all levels.
  • Acts as the local contact point, supporting the relationship with units and keeping the head office fully informed of all local needs and requests, including operational issues, training needs and reporting requirements.

Managing External Relationships

  • Fosters external relationships in a way that promotes the Company reputation and image with customers, the press, regulatory and industry bodies etc.
  • Monitors local regulatory developments, industry and regulatory trends, keeping HQ informed about the opinions/requests expressed by the local regulator

Supporting Projects and Business Change

  • Supports the business in the identification, planning, prioritisation, direction and delivery of projects which will improve the contribution of the local business unit or participates in high level, cross-functional projects which have a strategic impact on the corporate business.

The ideal candidate will bring;

  • Senior-level experience within the Financial Services/Retail Banking/Insurance industry, as a Business Development Manager or as a Key Account Manager.
  • A solid understanding of the drivers and basic principles of Financial Services/Retail Banking/Insurance industry business.
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese a serious advantage
  • Proven track record in managing third-party relationships.
  • Proven business writing skills.
  • Sound knowledge of insurance distribution systems and their capabilities.
  • Proven diagnostic, problem-solving and decision-making skills
